Infographic: Public Hiring Outlook for 2019

We focus a lot on private-employer hiring trends, but today we’re looking at public employer hiring trends for 2019. The International Professional Management Association for Human Resources (IPMA-HR)—which partners with The Center for State and Local Government Excellence (SLGE) and the National Association of State Personnel Executives on its annual workforce survey—has released a new infographic on 2019 public employment.
The infographic features data from IPMA-HR’s 2019 Employment Outlook Survey, which examined current employment trends in the public sector. The annual study addresses hiring for newly created positions, eliminating positions, open vacancies, and the effects of automation on employment. From 427 public sector HR professionals surveyed, 76% are from local governments.
With the advent of technology in the workplace, the Employment Outlook Survey collected information on the effects of new technology on hiring trends. From those public sector HR Professionals surveyed, 42% responded their organization has introduced technology or automation that now handles either all or part of the activities done by employees, a 6%-point increase from 2018 (36%). The majority of IPMA-HR members (87%) handle these changes by reassigning staff to other activities, rather than reducing staff (2%) or laying them off (3%).
